Cry Yorkie is Very Ill - When to Give Up

Our 13, almost 14 year old, Bentley is having trouble with a collapsing trachea. We thought we had it pretty much under control with steroids and other medicine, but now he has developed a lesion on his spinal cord and lost the ability to stand. Can't even stand to pee. And his breathing problems have gotten worse. We've spent over $1,000 on vet bills in the last two weeks, but he is getting worse every day and night. Last night he woke me having a terrible time breathing, I brought him downstairs before he woke my wife and stayed with him until daylight. (He cries if we leave him downstairs at night.) Our friends were over for dinner tonight, all dog lovers, and they said maybe it is time to put him to sleep. We've never done that before. This is going to be a very sad time. But I can't see any alternative. ???
