Brit...I know camera manuals just generally stink, but check your flash section in the manual bc you should have a red-eye-reduction flash setting. It can make a huge difference. Also, do you have an external flash? Bc the externals (even the sm. portable ones) allow you to 'bounce' the flash.

Also, if you like to try to avoid flash (me too) try increasing your ISO - that is a super easy/fast way to decrease your potential need for flash. And then also, also - set your aperture (fstop) WIDE open (and try using Aperture mode).
