Sophie Kate is has gone on trips with me a few times, I hate paying that fee for her when she is going to be under the seat in front of me by my feet (I thought I purchased that space already).
One poster made a statement about a child being on someone's lap and I agree - if passengers can have a "lap child" why can't I take my dog. Trust me I have set by some children in my time who were so horrible on flights I wanted to open the emergency exit, grab a beer and use the slide.
One suggestion I would make is if you fly Delta get their American Express, you can can check one bag free as long as you buy your ticket with that card - it helps with the fee's.
I should add I don't want to sound ugly towards children, I have also experienced great kids on planes who have made the trip even more enjoyable.
