That's why I use breakaway collars. I have one that I absolutely love. It's cotton, so it's completely washable, it's breakaway so when my naughty boy gets himself into anything dangerous it falls off (yet it's super sturdy at the same time), and it came with a bell. Let's see that little stinker get into the kitchen again to raid the trash without me noticing. The collar has proven itself. He got caught on something and emerged from the bedroom happy as can be without a collar. It probably saved us both some anguish. My friend got it for me from ebay.
