I'm not sure "sympathy" is what they feel, I wouldn't discount it though. I can say this, Elvis has seizures Scoobers loves Elvis but when Elvis had a seizure Scoobers growled at him and ignored him for a couple days afterward-I was advised to never leave them alone together as instinct may take over and Elvis may be attached during or after a seizure because its instinct to weed the sick from the pack...they've been together over a year now...Scoobers seems to sense when Elvis is going to have a seizure and he gets frantic and runs to find me now...I believe not only are dogs in-tuned with a sixth sense-they overcome wild instincts the more domesticated they get and we see that they show genuine emotions of caring and so on. When I'm stressed they sense it, when I don't feel good they snuggle me rather than want to play and be rowdy...they definitely care and show it.
I'm very sorry your husband is feeling ill how long has he been in remission for? I've been in remission for over 10 years now myself-it took a couple years after the last recurrence to actually get back to a normal state of health.
You can give a dog Pepto just like people you need to get the dosage from your vet though...also after vomiting up all they have you might want to switch to a bland diet-rice etc and double their water intake
