My boyfriend moved in with us after the first year and later his ex-wife needed to re-home her dog so Peanut came to us-she went to doggy daycare everyday and always did great with other dogs. I got Elvis and Princess actually a couple months apart, however they both came from the east coast and there was a flight restriction so they ended up on the same flight from Texas to California together, obviously arriving together. Elvis was from a kennel and had been very socialized at 2 years old, Princess was a puppy and came from a very large kennel that really worked on socialization. So I broke all the rules! Rule # 1 broken: not introducing prior to adoption:I think because the two we had at home at the time were so social, doggy daycare daily, dog park friendly, play dates with dogs of all sizes, training, etc we knew there would be no issue. Rule # 2 broken: getting two at the same time, well Elvis was socialized and he was 2 years old, Princess was a puppy but her kennel had he an additional 2 months due to the winter flight restriction and they really worked in socializing her for a multi-dog adult family, her kennel actually goes above and beyond in socializing their pups with dogs of all sizes, ages, people, children, as well they work on training exposure to all kinds of things since they are on a farm and near the city..they really try to make sure before sending a puppy they work with the puppy specifically to the new environment they will be going into (the Beers are awesome)...would I recommend what I did?-No-I'm a naughty rule breaker when it comes to my adoption process experience. | I should add we went down to Sacramento (stayed at my aunts house it was a big family event!) to pick Elvis and Princess our dogs so they all met in neutral areas, we kenneled the Princess, Scoobers and Peanut as they are used to this-Elvis was NOT used to being kenneled and its not fair to impose such-its like a cage to him not a den. We only had them do supervised play and meet and great for the first week keeping them separated taking turns on attention and such, so despite breaking the major rule requirements-we really made sure to consider all the little introduction things- also the dogs went to day care all week while the new additions got used to the house during the day-so even if you break the major part of the rule it's the little things that count-we also feed our dogs in multi raised feeders-each dog knows their bowl from scent and IS ONLY FED from that bowl-we had to feed different foods (we fed only Innova but in different types-Princess' kennel was nice enough to change over her food for me there 50/50 for like a month) to our dogs as two were young, one was a puppy and one a senior so because of this we never had any food aggression issue which I hear is the one of the biggest concerns. |
