Sorry i don't have anything to say about this situation in particular but i thought i would share my frustrations with you as they are similar.
I have the problem of people coming up to us and either having no idea that Denali is a yorkie asking questions like "oh what kind of dog is that? Oh it doesn't look like a yorkie, is he mixed?" etc. or they go "omg is that a yorkie? Why is he so big?!" Now my little Denali is not a big boy by any means- he only weighs 5.8lbs so he is by far within the standards but because he is not the tiny 2lb "teacup" yorkie that people are obsessed with he is for some reason huge.. It can be so annoying, so when this happens i tend to respond with "yes he is a pure bred yorkie and his weight is perfectly within the standard. Come on Denali let's go."
Some people are just ignorant but what can you do?
