Cottony coats usually have a duller (sometimes brownish cast) than silky coats. I have never seen a cotton steel blue. Another way to tell is temperature. A silky coat will stay sort of cool to the touch while the cotton coat heats up. Now any dog out in the FL sun for long will heat up so this is not a foolproof method either.
