Default So proud but still confused...

Sorry this is so long!

Last night was Corban's second night with me and he did so well. For the first night and the beginning of last night I kept him in his play pen in the living room. The first night I slept in the living room on the futon. When he started crying I layed down next to his play pen and petted him until he went to sleep. Then last night I tried going in my own room and boy did he have a fit! He sounded like someone was trying to kill him! I went and layed down next to his crate and petted him until he went to sleep again, then went back into my room. But as soon as he realized I was gone he went crazy again. So I put him in his traveling crate and brought him in my room and put him by my bed. He whimpered a little at first but then quickly stopped! He was quiet for about an hour and a half to two hours. This amazes and confuses me..why would he rather be in a cramped up crate as opposed to a more spacious play pen with his toys, food n water and potty area all in one place? Even the first night when I was with him in his play pen he still didn't do as well as he did in his crate. I'm baffled!

Also, he would whimper every couple of hours in his crate so I assumed that was because he needed to go potty. But when I take him out every so often and tell him to go potty he doesn't go! He goes on his own accord when I'm NOT telling him to go. It seems like he's just so excited about being out of his crate in the middle of the night. Infact, he peed in his crate on his fuzzy padded area. I guess I shouldn't complain about when he goes potty because atleast he goes potty in the right place most of the time (on his piddle pad) but how can I get him to potty when I say potty and make sure he goes when I take him out of his crate at night when he whimpers?
