I am in agreement with the others, it may indeed be food allergies. In the first 5 ingredients Science Diet contains 3 grains: Brewers Yeast, Whole grain wheat, and corn gluten meal........not good for any dog especially one who may be allergic to grains. Switching to a higher quality food which eliminates the grains as proteins, and uses the complete proteins from meat and fish, as well as supplements like the salmon oil may be a solution.
Also, for a fast help to relieve the itching and uncomforableness of your pet, you may want to try a "Hydrocortisone Spray" which is specifically made for dogs. That way you will also help mend the hotspots by using a topical. The brand that I found that works on my Andromeda when her allergies are really bad is called Pro*Pet. It is a clear oil-free spray which stops the itching immediately and gives her the relief she needs. It is sold over the counter at many pet and grocery stores. Good luck and please keep us updated.
