It wouldn't hurt to put a bit of vaseline on it if he can't get to it. If he's shaking some, he is possibly either feverish or hurting. Perhaps after he has something to eat tonight he'll feel better. I can always see when Kacee empties her anal glands. Do you have to have his emptied or does he empty them himself?
