Well let me think. Can you get those tangles out before you take him in for grooming? All you need is patience, a comb, and a whole lot of love for your Gizmo. You just start at the end of the hair, and comb upwards until you encounter a tangle, then pause, turn comb on side, and carefully separate tangle and take little pieces of the tangle to work on for tangle down to tip of hair.
If there are too many tangles then the groomer may have to resort to clipping him really short.
Have you been brushing him, washing him, and clipping his nails? It is best if you have cause then he is used to being groomed.
But to answer your question 4mths is not too early to bring to a good groomer.
