i dont know if you can keep it from matting really. when i put my harley's clothes on him i try to fix his hair after i get him dressed and brush him more regularly. the longer he has the garment on the more matted he gets if i don't brush him. i find it helps if i brush his hair from the tips and work my way down to the roots while holding the section of hair at the root so it doesn't pull his skin.
