Dogs with MVD do need lower protein but they also need certain types of protein. For example Daisy is on 16% protein which is only 5% less than what my boys get. But she would be deathly ill from 20 grams of chicken and deathly ill from even less red meat. She can ONlY eat vegetable proteins and she is thriving and doing fantastic. So to add to what Debra said, please consult with someone who can advise you not only on the amount of protein but also who will advise on the amino acid profiles and types of proteins.
