You can read all you want, attend as many shows as you want. But with out a quality mentor, you are never going to start a quality breeding program. And I guarantee, a good mentor is not going to tell anyone that they will find a good breeder from the classifieds. They are going to send them in the direction of another quality breeder with a proven history of healthy dogs that consistently meet breed standard. And a good stud owner isn't going to want to dilute their lines with a substandard bitch either.
If you say you got a good one after looking at 10's of litters, then lucky you. But it isn't the norm.
