Thanks, everybody! Maximo, the tin contains a Q-tip with a birch essential oil odor, specifically "Sweet Birch", aka Betula Lenta.
The national nose work association chose 3 specific odors to use in competition so all dogs nationwide would be trained to identify the exact same thing. The birch is the first one they learn.
Next comes:
Anise (we use "Aniseseed" aka*Pimpinella anisum variety, NOT Star Anise,Illicium verum)
and
Clove*(we use "Clove Bud" aka Eugenia Caryophylatta or Syzgium Aromaticum)
I wouldn't advise anyone to buy the oils and dive in without some instruction. Eddie took two 6-week classes finding treats before odors were even introduced.
