Yeah, I get what you're saying. They probably just like the food better and are eating more. Just because a dog is eating more though doesn't mean they NEED more... they probably just like the food. If you put a Large size of McDonald's french fries in front of me, I'm probably going to eat them all... lol but I def. don't NEED them, but since it's sitting there in front of me and they are so tasty, I'm probably going to.

If they begin gaining weight, I would definitely not continue free-feeding. It just sounds really excessive to nearly double the amount of food that they used to eat, esp. when it's a food that they should be given less of. I would just put a certain amount in the bowl that they can have and once it's gone, it's gone.
