We use xpens to expand their area, we never did crate training....just laundry room and then laundry and kitchen and then expanded to the breakfast nook area.
We still don't allow them full run when we leave (carpeted areas) occassionally we still find a dribble under the dining table when we are home and they "sneak" to it.
