Welcome to YT!! You've definitely come to the right place for camping with Yorkies as we do it all the time, as does Bettyeanne, another member here.

The very best thing to have for your baby at the campsite is an x-pen (one of those folding wire pens like a playpen that they sell in pet stores). If you know that you won't have shade where you are going, be sure to take a sheet or umbrella to give the pen some shade. Now then, just tuck in a nice bowl of water, perhaps some of her dry dog food, and LOTS of toys to play with....oh, and an old shirt or little dog bed would be nice for her to lie on.

Be SURE to get her a little harness, rather than a collar, and begin leash training! We use the retractable leashes since they don't seem to get so tangle up in little Yorkie legs. Be ESPECIALLY CAREFUL about taking your baby near big dogs. They may be very friendly, but our babies are so tiny, it's easy for them to get hurt. Be sure she is IN YOUR ARMS around other dogs.

In addition to her regular food and water and her regular bowls, take along bottled water for her to drink. Different water, more than anything else, can cause problems for tender little tumtums.

Also, they are in danger of getting hypothermia. I got Higgins a sweatshirt to wear at night when we are camping. You will want to have her snuggle/sleep with you at night so that she doesn't become too chilled, or at least have some very fluffy, warm blankets in a warm bed up off your tent floor for her.

You'll want to take lots of plastic bags for pickin' up poops, so that you'll be responsible campers.

At 4 1/2 months, your pup has presumably had all vaccinations, which is important when you are around other dogs and any possible wild rabies exposure. Be sure to take medical records and proof of rabies with you, as most campgrounds require them. I keep them in a specially marked envelope in my car's glove compartment, so they're handy.

We also made a name tag for Higgins with our cell phone number on it. Just in case...just in case....oh God, wouldn't that be awful?

I pack all their gear in a big canvas boat bag from LL Bean, including a little brush and their own towels. And don't forget the peepee pads! They're great in the tent/camper at night and the x-pen during the day. Bettyanne puts a blue plastic tarp down inside the x-pen, but I just let Higgins have fun diggin' in the dirt. He's all boy and loves to dig!

Whatever you do, don't leave her alone. Yorkies are VERY stealable and very much in demand! And keep an eye out for any raptors (hawks, eagles, osprey) in the area -- they will swoop down and grab a little pup in the blink of an eye. Try to place your x-pen under a tree so she is not so exposed.

Camping is a WONDERFUL experience for dogs! It is great socialiazation experience for puppies! So good for them to get out in the big world. And you will have some memories to cherish forever.

WHATEVER YOU DO.....DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERA!!!

Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Hugs,
Mary Ellen
