Here's something I read here a long time ago, if you get an ear wash.

Drip liquid into both ears, and then hold the ear flaps down for about a minute. Make sure the liquid has dripped fully into the ears before folding the flap, as this closes access to the canal.

After a minute, release the ears. Your dog will shake his head, which will help the dissolved dirt move out of the inner ear. Then gently swab the ear folds and the the flap with a q tip.

I'm lucky: Thor's ears pretty much never get dirty. I don't even pluck the ear hair. I bought this special wash from the vet, and I think in two years, I found wax in one ear, one time.
