Personally, I didn't find that vaseline or top knot gel weighed the hair down enough. Instead, it would create spikes of hair that would poke into his eyes that much harder. A lot of people have success with it, though.

One thing you might try, though it will take more patience: selectively trim hair so there's never a ton of it sticking into the eyes. Let some of the hair grow long until it's no longer an issue, then let some of the other hair grow, and so on. Assuming you want long hair, of course.
