You want to make sure that the band is never too tight, they will lose circulation to the area if it's too tight, and it will actually blacken and a bald spot will develop. Joey's breeder suggested placing a metal comb between scalp and band to make sure that there was enough room. Most dogs don't care for the bows at first. Start with a band, and then graduate to the puppy bows that are a simple loop. This site gives some great tips on getting you puppy use to bows.

Joey's breeder gave me a bone shaped pillow that she said to use for grooming and never for play. He places his head on the pillow as soon as I start brushing his forehead with a soft baby brush. He's learned to be very patient with me. I'm all thumbs and it occasionally takes me some time, but he doesn't seem to mind waiting.
