For a dominant male; you definitely need a submissive female. I'd say temprement is going to be more important than breed.

I have a dominant male Westie and my Vet and breeder strongly suggested a female - one without delusions of grandeur as well.

Lucy is a submissive female and they make a great team.

Another male dog in my household simply would not have worked with Ringo's dominant personality.
