this same thing happened at a nearby veterinary clinic while I was working for another one. we heard about it and knew that it might bring some really bad news for their clinic. i guess the news never did get word about it and the owners kept it quiet, but they did go to bury their animal and found out it was wriggling in the blankets they had brought it home in. almost went in the ground before they realized it was moving. it was alive but i don't think in very good mental condition. i was horrified when i found it out and sort of forget about telling you guys until i saw this article. yes it happens please make sure the pet is gone before leaving the vet.
