My Lady has been diabetic since she was 6.5 years old.

You are right, Alfie doesn't fall into the group that is most at risk for diabetes (middle aged, overweight dogs with a genetic predisposition for diabetes). Diabetes can always be caused by repeated bouts of pancreatitis or steriods, too.

There is such a thing as juvenile diabetes in dogs, but it is more common in unspayed females.

It could be something as simple as a urinary tract infection.

Let us know what the vet says.
