My little guy has (I've been told) a mild case of IBD. We have been able to control it very well through diet. Namely, he gets a raw diet (Nature's Variety medallions). Since changing to that diet, he's had very few problems. Only when he gets into another dog's food or overeats does he have any tummy issues now.
