Muffin used to growl - not ferociously - when we were playing kind of rough. It was just play growling though. Nothing mean. She wouldn't have bitten ever.
In fact, sometimes I'll kiss Kacee just on top of her nose and she will growl under her breath, but she won't bite for anything, either. I am always doing that to her when we are playing, too.
A lot of puppies playing growl - usually quietly.
