As a vet tech I know how hard it can be to poke the little ones. Of course I always hate doing it but then you have the little tiny veins to worry about. We NEVER do this in front of the owner, not because thiers anything to hide but when someone is watching you poke their baby the pressure is intense and the dog can often read the owners worried vibes. Usually its a "3 pokes your out" rule of thumb, saying if you don't get it by the third poke you had it to soemone else, that being said thier should also not be a lot of "fishing" going on under the skin. Sometimes when you poke the vien rolls just out of the way and it's less painfull to redirect while still under the skin instead of taking it out and peircing the skin again. You should only try this maybe twice though, searching around under the skin for the vein isn't fun for the pet or the owner. Sorry you had a bad expeirence, I would ask for the lead nurse next time blood is needed.
