We were taught to tap under the chin never on top because they become skiddish to hands coming to pet or even a human offering a hand to sniff first. And they tend to nip or bite then. or to cower and act afraid. I have been told in training by very experienced trainers to do this also. But I myself have only used it on my bigger dogs. Collies, shepareds and labs. But I have had to use it once or twice when Cooper had bit me for something I was tring to do to him. (Trim toenails, mostly)
But only once or twice. Now I use a sonic noise maker or a rattle and that works good . But he is almost 3 yrs old too.
Hope this helps.
