It was funny....one semester in the 9th grade all boys had to take a home ec class and all the girls had to take a shop class.
The girls learned stuff about changing tires, oil in cars, general house maintenance.
Guy learned to iron, cook, sew (especially how to sew buttons back on) patch jeans, etc.
Back in the 80's when I was in school we hated it, but I will tell you, that when I went to college and lived on my own that class has become invaluable to me over the years.
