Miles learned to sit and lay down in one afternoon. After that, it was just making him do it often enough that he wouldn't forget! I got some treats and chopped them up into tiny little bits, sat on the floor with him and began training. I started with sit: Say the word "sit" (and ONLY the word "sit), then gently put him into the sit position. Once he sat, I praised him like crazy with "good sit!!!" and gave him a treat. I did this over and over and over again. I would say after about ten rounds of making him "sit", he was catching on. Same with lay down (used the command "down"). We did this ALL afternoon.
