Was the "old" crate a metal one or the plastic carrier type? The reason I ask is that if the old one was the carrier type, then it had more "closure" around the sides.

You might consider a blanket or throw on top of it that hangs down the sides that makes it more like a "cave". We generally do that with the new fosters that come in. They like having "their own" place.
