Well, it was love at second sight for me! The puppy we originally picked out from the litter was failing to grow and thrive and ended up with liver shunt and died.
We had had her picture for weeks and we were so sad. BUT, even the second time we visited our puppy - I noticed my Lucy. She was so bouncy and curious and friendly while the pup we were there to visit (the one that was sick and we didn't know it yet) was so quiet and just crawled up in Matthew's hands and fell asleep. So he was in love with her. I agreed to pick her but all the while kept remembering Lucy's bouncy playfulness and thinking about how she might be a better fit for my active Ringo.
When the breeder sadly told me the first puppy died; she offered us Lucy and, of course, we accepted.
I still feel sad for the little puppy's short little life; but Lucy has fit into our family so well. She entices Ringo to play with her - even when he's tired and cranky; she just hounds him until he does what she wants. She was so tiny when I picked her up; smaller than what I expected; I was almost afraid she was too fragile. She slept on my bed from Day 1.
She turned out to have some health issues of her own; but I think all that taking care of her when she was a puppy - only brought us closer together.
I never thought I could be as close to any dog as I was my very first dog - Casper, my maltese.
But, it turns out that I can.
