I guess I'm just not that trusting by nature. I kind of equate it to buying a used car and just taking the seller's word for it that there's nothing wrong with it and never bothering to have it checked by a mechanic.
Well of course I had Merlin checked by my Vet. Which is the equivalent of having a used car checked by a mechanic-or IS it? Really-I think this analogy is way off-I could never think of Merlin as being a used car-but I digress. At the time I loved him way too much to give him up even though my Vet pointed out his congenital defects.. At the risk of being redundant, (this is really getting old)-in 20/20 hindsight, no one was debating that it is best to do your homework before you adopt. This is a given. I'm not even sure why we are still talking about this. We all agree that this is so. I'm sure the OP would never make the same mistake again now that she knows about this. Your point was never in question. It was the way you chose to communicate it that could be hurting. My point was that people who don't know about such things can easily fall prey to dishonest people and not even know there was anything to worry about. Adopting a fur kid can be a very emotional thing, and emotions can be easily manipulated. I understand your thinking, and it is sound. You deserve kudos for not making this mistake like some of us. You are way ahead. My point is simple. Treat each other with gentleness and understanding. We never know when we may need it ourselves. Tolerance is what I'm promoting. Unless we believe that we will never ever make a mistake again in our entire lives. And seriously-most people in this culture grow up with awareness of used car salesmen and their practices. But if they did not know a thing about it-they might make the same mistake with used cars until they learned better. But hey, maybe you would research it anyway, because that's what you do, and that's who you are. Again, kudos to you. But not everyone is like you. That's my point. People of different natures inhabit our planet. And they all deserve our respect, even though they may not be or think like us. Some people are more trusting, some people are less. There are positives and negatives to both of these. i'm just saying 'can't we all get along?'
