Excellent post. I have been doing titers on Vinnie for at least 6 years now. He gets his rabies shot (because that is required), but we do a titer for distemper and I think one other thing. Since we've been doing the titers, he has had sufficient antibodies such that he has not required any shots other than his rabies (and we do bordatella when he goes to get groomed).

I started doing the titer test with Vinnie because he got really sick after a batch of shots one time. I also felt like the shots were just a little overboard, given his size. I would highly recommend the titer testing not only for dogs, but for people too. I believe in immunizations, but we do know there are concerns with overimmunization, so avoiding shots whenever they are not needed is probably a good thing.
