My oldest sleeps in our bed with us. If I would leave my 12 weeks old running around she would pee everywhere since she is not trained yet. Crate is not cruel, as I said before, my oldest is not crated anymore, but when she is tired she will go in there to rest, we call it her bubble, we don't even pick her up from the crate to respect her right of wanting to be left alone.
Now, after a week at our home my puppy also uses her crate during the day even with the door open.
I think every dog, every home and every owner are different. In this case there is no right wrong, but what works for you might not work for me and vice-versa. As long we have happy and healthy pups, that all that matters.
