So, I firt put the crate in the kitchen with a blanket the breeder slept with before giving her to me, a blanket with my other dog's scent and my t-shirt. So during the day she would come and go as she pleased. I also had water, a few chewing toys and food in the crate. The first night she slept OK in he crate. But then on her second day with us she spent most of the day on my lap, so at bed time she cried and cried. She was fed, didn't need to go potty and I knew she was not sick, so I took the crate out to the living room so we could sleep. That was only one night, now the crate is always by my bed and she does not cry anymore.
You could give it a try, the crate is a place where the dog feels safe, my oldest is not crated anymore, but she uses her crate all the time on free will.
