To me personally, it was just easier with a 1 yr old dog. He came potty trained, un-neutered (took care of that ASAP), with a bad marking habit. I "fixed" all that in 1.5-2 months before my schedule got wacky and I had less time for him. Now that I have a full load with work, and some days I don't come home till.. well, let's just say late. I honestly don't worry about him as much. He has water, companionship (although he's not always nice to the people at home), free roam of the house (he earned that) and a clean piddle pad. I do miss his sweet little face though.

As far as 5 months go, that depends on you and the puppy. Some pups actually pick things up really quick, some are stubborn little things. If you're consistent, stick to a daily schedule, and have lots of love and patience, I'm sure it can be done.
