When I first came to the USA most people couldn't understand my Lancashire accent either.
I remember the day before we left England I had my hair done and had so much hair spray on it I just wanted to get it washed out when I got here.
We stayed with Bruce's grandmother in Cumberland, MD and Bruce took me to the local chemist (drug store). I asked for a lacquer removing shampoo and the clerk didn't understand me. I had to repeat myself three times and she still didn't understand me. Bruce thought it was funny, and he said to the clerk "You'll have to forgive my wife, she just arrived in the states and doesn't speak English yet"
He translated for me! It turned out that they didn't make a shampoo over here specifically for removing hair spray! But the clerk did tell Bruce that I obviously spoke better English than they did
