Can anyone tell me how they trim the hair on top of the head of you don't want a topknot?

I prefer to keep Shadow's hair on the short side and don't want a topknot. I groom her myself but don't want to use a clipper (afraid I'll get a buzz cut), and I'm not sure if it should be trimmed like a human's head.

Any advice?
