I don't know how a cotton ball would work. Alcohol is automatic drying agent. While it does the job, it does not have acidifers to properly acidifiy the ear canal. The longer you leave the water in the ear canal the more you risk an infection. If neither of those things help, why wouldn't he see him today. Ear problems can elevate quickly.
