omg I just watched an amazing Cesar episode on a small dog that did that. It was awesome, however, I don't feel I'm qualified to try and relay any advice he provided on that... but I think the jist of it was to teach the dog, that it's ok to sniff, but then look for your for guidance, and when they look at you, you give a treat to reward them for not eating the bad stuff.
That was a bit of a crappy explanation. I think it's basically trying to show them there are better treats to eat than the bad stuff like your remote.
