An x-pen allows your pup freedom to play with safety. Keep in mind pups are den animals. Don't look at it as a cage, but their little sanctuary, a place they can call their own and retreat too. Another thing you can consider is he needs quiet time. Pups haven't a clue on when to rest. He needs lots of it at this point. Even though he's on the higher end of the weight scale, at his young age there still is the possibility of hyperglycemia. Too much activity, over handling, not enough food, water, can contribute to it. So, be a mom and put him down to rest as you would a baby.
