The amounts given on my dog food packs suggest 3/4 cup a day for a 9 pound dog - as mine is (he keeps a constant weight on 3/4 cup). It must depend on the food brand. I use California Natural and/or Blue Buffalo Chicken/rice.
It is easier to feed less when the dog is not like a vacuum cleaner for food. LOL!
Typically speaking, poorer quality foods require you to feed more. Higher calorie, higher protein foods you can feed less! I currently feed Acana Grasslands and the bag DOES suggest more, but I find he doesn't need nor want anymore food. I don't go by the bag guidelines anymore, I go by individual dog and what they need and their body type, etc. Plus calorie intake. Jackson also gets a lot of treats throughout the day. When he was free-fed, he self regulated at 1/2 cup a day. But I give him wet food mixed in too so it probably equals out to 3/4 cup per day.
