When the bones get disgusting and slimy I run them through the dish washer. Some of the bones are several years old and I have only had to discard a couple because of wear. With the shanks, you can rub peanut butter, cream cheese, etc. in the middle for an extra treat.

Antlers are another good chew treat that last forever. If you know a hunter ask for extra antlers, cut the sharp tips off and then to 7" - 8" lengths.
Bridget loves the bones - but I can't find them here - the butcher in our stores refuse to cut them because he says they are a safety hazard when they are being cut!! All I can find is the really large pieces! But you're right - they do last forever!
