I buy beef shanks, make a pot of soup and give the cleaned bones to the kids. I know that there is a lot of controvery about giving "cooked bones" because of splintering, but I have never had this problem with the shanks. I also give beef rib bones. When the bones get disgusting and slimy I run them through the dish washer. Some of the bones are several years old and I have only had to discard a couple because of wear. With the shanks, you can rub peanut butter, cream cheese, etc. in the middle for an extra treat.
Antlers are another good chew treat that last forever. If you know a hunter ask for extra antlers, cut the sharp tips off and then to 7" - 8" lengths. |
