IMO, scheduled feedings is the way to go, especially if you have multiple furbutts

I have one that will gain weight just by l@@king at a kibble!
Scheduled meals works great here, everyone eats from their own bowls, and when they are all done, AprilLove goes to each bowl and licks them clean until they all shine
