Ouch! Splinters in the tummy not to mention the mouth. Maybe you can wrap the wood w/ that indoor ~ outdoor grass carpet stuff? Maybe he will be less apt to chew on it.
Your idea is wonderful so I'm sure there is a way of training him not to chew on his potty aids, LOL.
