Heartworm tests need to be done if your pet has been off the monthly pill for at most 2 months. He could have picked up heartworms any time after you walked out the vets door on the day of the last blood test. Its always best to give the heartworm pills once a month from spring to fall. then retest the next spring before starting again. Heartworm meds MUST be purchased from the vet because it requires a prescription.
Flea meds can be purchased at a pet store. However, while cheaper then the vet, you may not be getting the same product. And if your pet as a severe reaction to the meds the manufacturer will not pay for treatment if the product was not purchased from a vet.
