RMBs can be great. I don't use them, only bc I'd rather not have the mess. But the mess really isn't that bad....you can just have them chew on a towel or something.
Yes, they are a choking hazard. Anything that can be chewed off in the right size and swallowed has the potential to be a choking hazard, in my opinion. For that matter, kibble is a choking hazard too, though...and we've seen that here at YT.
Raw bones are less brittle than cooked bones (which should never be given) and less likely to splinter and create shards. However, that does not mean they are 100% safe...just like no 'chew' is truly safe.
You can either get consumable bones (the kind where they can eat the meat and the bone, entirely) or non-consumable bones (where the bones are too big for them, and they instead can only get the meat off).
The clerk you talked to may have been talking about marrow bones. Like a femur bone or something. These are large bones that come with the marrow (usually) still inside (the marrow is like a very thick paste). Marrow is VERY, very fatty - so it's usually best to remove the marrow, imo. Or leave very, very little of it...just for taste/smell. Then later, you can put peanut butter inside
